Our 5 Favorite Speech and Language Apps: #1 Splingo’s Language Universe

From all of us at District Speech and Language therapy, Happy New Year!!! We’ve got an exciting new countdown to start off 2017… our top 5 favorite speech and language apps!

This week: Splingo’s Language Universe

Splingo’s Language Universe was one of the first apps we were introduced to after graduate school … and for good reason! Splingo is an app we use with most of our kiddos. It’s the app that we get the most out of since it’s  educational and fun at the same time. The goal is to get Splingo the alien from one planet to the next until he’s finally home. Users are asked to follow complex commands, which include various basic concepts, to advance. The best part: the player is then asked to complete various tasks in between advancing to each level, such as building Splingo’s rocket, filling the rocket with fuel, and picking friends, activities, and snacks to accompany Splingo on his way home…all of which our kiddos love!

Splingo’s Language Universe – A Galaxy of Language Learning  

Whether at home, at school, or in the clinic here’s how you can use this engaging app to promote speech and language:

Splingo is a game used to target listening skills, specifically receptive language/auditory comprehension, through following complex directions. Splingo will give your kiddo a direction such as “Put the red ball on the chair” or “Give the king’s crown to the lion.” It is important to note that complex directions and multistep directions are different, as complex commands include modifiers such as basic concepts, and don’t necessarily have two or three different steps to follow.

….which brings us to our next targeted area, basic concepts.

Splingo’s directions include basic concepts such as prepositions (i.e., on top, under, behind, next to), colors, and common opposites (i.e., wet/dry, big/little, clean/dirty).

Splingo also teaches vocabulary, including naming words (nouns) and action words (verbs). Since the player can pick from 4 levels, ranging from a very early level of language development to much more complex, Splingo is completely customizable to your kiddo’s developmental level.
